ALTER
Final year project - Product Design Technology with Professional Experience BSc.
The negative health affects of air pollution are widespread and stated to be the fourth biggest killer globally, reducing life expectancy at a similar rate as all cancers (1).
The most dangerous form of pollution to public health is particulate matter, specifically pm2.5 or smaller. Alter is a watch and app that aids runners and cyclists exercising in polluted areas to avoid harsh exposure and improve the air they breathe.
01
Research
This project began by looking at air pollution as a whole. This involved creating and defining a research question. When defining the research question, further questions were asked to create a wealth of knowledge around the subject, adding to the literature review. What are the key groups affected by air pollution? How does air pollution affect the key groups health, lifestyle and behaviour? What is the relationship between the affected group and air pollution?

Ideation
Following research, having defined the problem area to be tackled and created a vision statement, ideation began. A variety of techniques were used to generate ideas followed by a succession analysis methods to converge on the 3 best ideas to satisfy the vision statement.

Development
Development of the watch began by identifying 10 specification points. The specification points were driven by the research and once satisfied produced a useful, useable, meaningful and desirable product.

Launch
For launch, final renders were created along side a video to explain the product and its development.
Note - the video was created in COVID lockdown with zero budget.
