CAD Modelling & Drawing

Being proficient in solidworks prior to my employment at Cleynderts meant I was well suited to becoming a CAD draughtsman. I completed work for a range of different project such as bespoke furniture, doors, cabinetry, kitchens, wall panelling, fittings and more. This position has helped me develop a set of well rounded knowledge and skills required of a CAD draughtsman within the industry.

Drawing exemplar

Below, a drawing of a side table for a yacht. The side table has a marble base, stainless steel frame with a champagne gold plating and a veneered top. When creating the details of this table (larger designs provided by client), it presented many challenges. Firstly tolerances varied between the three materials and their connections, making it challenging to achieve the perfect fit with all joins. The wooden top will contract and expand depending on the heat and moisture conditions. To counter this, tolerances were chosen based on temperature and moisture data. Moisture resistant MDF was chosen to further reduce any expansion, twisting, cupping, etc as it is a very stable base. The next challenged involved pre cutting holes in the marble for the screws, as incorrect sizing will leave the piece either too loose, or crack the marble under pressure. To keep the marble attached to the table without it cracking, it is sandwiched between a stainless steel plate and the frame. As this is a piece of marine furniture, a specific grade of stainless steel (SS316) was used to ensure it did not corrode. The table was challenging however the end result was an exquisite, finely crafted bespoke piece. The details have been blurred as to remain undisclosed.

Research & Development

Bill Cleyndert & Company being at the forefront of bespoke furniture and joinery, there is frequent need for development of new products and methods. An example of this is the positive locking mechanism I co-developed. This is a device created to simply lock cabinet doors shut when a yacht is travelling. This unit has been developed for easy insertion into all cabinet units. It has also been designed to minimise wear from friction within the mechanism. This will reduce need for maintenance.

Care in the detail

As a draughtsperson, you have a responsibility for accuracy and detail. The drawings you produce will be sent to the workshop for manufacture. It is imperative you have considered every aspect of the piece, from the construction to the finish.

Estimation & site visits

Finally, as well as CAD work, I participated in a number of other roles. One of the main roles was estimations, in which I assisted Ash with estimating the cost of jobs. This sought to give me a more robust knowledge on the industry and our practises. This paired with site visits for the installation of work has left me confident with my skills and abilities in the industry, and furthermore in any work place.
